A plain guide

Hearing supplements: What to look for.

Most supplements sold for hearing are ordinary multivitamins with a picture of an ear on the label. A few are formulated for the inner ear specifically. This is how to tell them apart.

What a hearing supplement is and why the inner ear is a special case

A hearing supplement is a dietary supplement formulated around the nutrients the inner ear uses. It is a supplement, not a drug, and needs no prescription.

A general antioxidant is not the same thing as one formulated for hearing, because the problem the inner ear faces is specific.

  • Sound exposure and aging generate free radicals in the cochlea
  • Oxidative stress accelerates cell aging, including inner ear cells
  • The ear’s own antioxidant defenses can be overwhelmed

Four things worth checking on any label

The category is crowded, so the label is where most of the signal is.

  • A named, specific formulation, not a generic multivitamin with an ear on the front
  • A stated ratio between ingredients, because the combination is the point
  • Research you can actually read, with authors, journals and dates
  • The honest FDA disclaimer, rather than claims to treat or cure anything, which is not allowed by law.
