A plain guide

Magnesium and hearing

Magnesium turns up in almost every hearing formulation on the market, usually without explanation. Here is what it is doing there, and whether it is worth taking on its own.

What magnesium does in the inner ear

The inner ear depends on blood flow, and loud noise reduces it. That vascular part of the problem is separate from the oxidative part, and antioxidants do not touch it.

Magnesium is a vasodilator. That is the job it is doing in a hearing formulation, and it is why the mineral appears alongside antioxidants rather than instead of them.

Is magnesium on its own enough?

This has been tested directly. A 2007 preclinical paper in Free Radical Biology and Medicine reported that neither the antioxidant vitamins nor the magnesium reliably reduced noise trauma at the doses used when each was given alone, and that in combination they were highly effective.

So the answer the published work gives is that the pairing is what matters, not the mineral by itself. That finding is also the reason the formula on this site exists in the form it does.

About us

Why magnesium is in ACEMg

ACEMg is beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Magnesium in a specific ratio. The first three are antioxidants. Magnesium is the fourth element and it is doing a different job: it is the vasodilator.

The pairing is the patented part. The formulation exists because the combination was developed and patented for the inner ear, rather than assembled from ingredients that each sounded useful on their own.

  • Deliver targeted antioxidants that support inner ear cells
  • Help defend against oxidative stress before damage occurs
  • Support healthy cochlear blood flow
